Picture Windows Provide a Room with a View

Picture windows are generally large windows that do not open up. Also called picture frame windows, they offer clear, unobstructed exterior views. They’re great for areas of the home where you do not need (or even want) to open the window.

These windows are all about letting in light, sweeping exterior views, and giving the home a magnificent look. They’re one single piece, not separate panes, to provide unobstructed exterior views.

Picture windows are centerpieces in every sense of the word, adding value to most homes. They also tend to be “centered” on exterior walls, providing a heightened dramatic look.

A few facts about picture windows

Picture windows are secure

Picture windows are “fixed” windows, referring to their inability to open. Because picture windows are inoperable or stationary, they can’t be opened by trespassers, adding a level of security.

Adding ventilation to your window

Want more ventilation, but like the safety aspect of your large picture window?

Try adding a flanking venting window or a transom style window to the top of your picture window.

Transom windows are small decorative windows positioned directly above a larger window to provide light and ventilation. They often open with a hinge and can be pushed outward, while the more easily accessible (ground level) picture window stays closed. Because transom windows are placed higher and often smaller in size, your home remains secure.

There are a variety of window shapes that can be used this way, including semi-circle or elliptical-shaped windows, Rounded on the top, flat on the bottom. When combined with the picture window, the semi-circle or elliptical window on top makes the pair look like an arched window.

Picture windows can be combined with other window types to create new shapes

In addition to the semi-circle/picture window combo mentioned above, the functionality may be added to picture windows when combined with other window types including awning windows, sliding windows, traditional single or double pane windows.

These and other window combinations may provide ventilation and other uses.

Bay windows are one common picture window combo

One popular picture window combo is the bay window.

Bay windows are commonly formed by taking one picture window, centering it, then flanking it with two other windows, one on each side. The two additional windows protrude out, giving the window a 3-dimensional shape.

Some bay windows have a distinctive angled, boxy, or polygonal shape while others are more circular. But whether circular, boxy, or angular in shape they often let in more light and make rooms appear larger.

Use these three-dimensional windows to accent breakfast nooks, and other cozy spaces. They may also be used to disguise, fix or bring purpose to awkwardly shaped room areas.

Picture windows can be stacked to create larger window walls

Picture windows can be stacked on top of each other, as well in combination with other window types.

This combination can create “a wall of windows” effect to the front home exterior, or to any two abutting exterior walls (creating an oversized “corner window”) if enough windows are added. To create this effect, architects or renovators may mix and match several windows of different shapes and sizes, to create symmetrical or asymmetrical looks.
